Spring Trends 2010:Hair

The Side Braid
"Leona Lewis's braid is soft and not severe. It's perfect for girls who still like to have some hair around their face," says her stylist, Ben Cooke. STEP ONE Gather your hair on one side of your head and split into two handfuls. STEP TWO For a fishtail braid, like Lewis's, pull a small section from the bottom of one handful and bring it around to the top of other. Repeat. Cooke also likes a conventional braid created from three unevenly-sized ropes.

The High Bun
"Jessica Alba's style is sophisticated and modern, plus the headband gives it a relaxed feel so it's not so serious," says her stylist Robert Ramos. STEP ONE Let your hair dry naturally, then finger-comb it back into a ponytail at the top of your head. STEP TWO Separate the ponytail into two or three sections, which makes the bun more manageable to handle, and loosely wrap them each around the base, securing with bobby pins as you twist. STEP THREE To keep the style from being "too slick and flat," rub a dollop of texturizing cream between your hands and work it into the front of the hair.

The Grown-Out Pixie
WHY IT WORKS "Ginnifer is a really pretty girl and this cut opens up her face and enhances her features," says Anh Co Tran, her stylist. "Longer hair really hid her beauty." WHAT TO ASK FOR Layered front pieces that are long enough to tuck behind the ears; short and choppy 1" to 1-1/2" strands everywhere else.

The Schoolboy
WHY IT WORKS "Keri Hilson has an oval face and the cut adds dimension to her cheekbones," says Garren. "She also has that asymmetrical thing going on, which makes it very girly. Plus, the highlights add a modern edge."

The Bob
WHY IT WORKS "The length accentuates Christina's jawline while the side-part opens up her face," says hairstylist Garren, who has worked with Victoria Beckham and Angelina Jolie, among others. "What really makes it special is the incredibly modern, high-blond shade."

The Pixie
WHY IT WORKS "Carey Mulligan has bird-like features but full brows—the cut has a wholesome and appealing effect," says Garren. "I also love the slight texture and the way the bangs come forward from the crown."
